Happy Saturday, Y’all! Another big icy winter storm got us again in Austin this week — and I hope all of my fellow Austinites and Central Texans have been staying safe and warm! For those still without power, I sincerely hope everything will be restored as soon as possible. However, please let me know if you (or someone you know) need anything or are looking for any local resources! My team and I would love to help in any way we can.
On the real estate side, I wanted to share for Austin-area homeowners that there is still time to file for your 2023 Homestead Exemption!
Having your primary residence registered as a homestead with the county appraisal district is one of the ways that you can save on property taxes here in Texas. The way it works is that the value of your property is going to reset when you purchase it. However, in subsequent years, your tax value can only go up a maximum of 10%, even if the market value increases far exceed that, as we've seen over the past couple of years here in Austin.
If you closed on your home last year and you haven't filed your homestead exemption yet, the deadline to do so is April 30th. (I’ve included links to where you can file your application based on your county down below!)
And if you’ve owned your home a lot longer than a year, there are some extra hoops to jump through if you don't already have your Homestead Exemption. But, the long-term benefits are significant, and it's really worth getting this done as well! Please let me know if you have any questions — I’d be happy to help!
