Celebrating Dads + Staying at Home

Happy Tuesday! Are you finding yourself sick of all this sheltering in place? Do you just want to be able to do all the normal summer things you love to do, maybe have a margarita at ATX Cocina or go see a movie at Alamo Drafthouse? Are you ready to be with friends live and in-person or travel to see lonesome family members?

I know the feeling! I'm right there with you and want to send some encouragement (to myself as well!) to hang in there and remember all the freedom and abundance we still get to enjoy.....safely from inside our homes. One thing I've learned the hard way (I can hear my dad's voice now: "Do you want to learn it the easy way or the hard way?" YIKES! He could be scary when he wanted to be) is that my health is the most important thing. Without that, the possibilities in life are dramatically limited. When it comes to COVID, what's most important is protecting the health of those among us who are most vulnerable. It seems the situation has shifted in Austin and our numbers are rapidly climbing. So let's all stay home whenever possible and wear masks when we must go out! And let's stay focused on what we DO have and what we CAN do! I hope you find some inspiration below.

Wherever you may be, you can now access Ballet Austin's dance and fitness classes online! Starting at $3 per class, you can have fun and stay active with professional guidance from Ballet Austin's instructors.

Access to Austin Arts

The Austin Symphony Orchestra has teamed up with 89.5 KMFA for a special broadcast series on Sundays through July 5th while in-person concerts are cancelled. Read more here.

The cancellation of SXSW and continuing virus concerns have moved the Austin Asian American Film Festival online. You can access the festival offerings through June 17th here!

Celebrate Juneteenth

Juneteenth recognizes the day in 1865 when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger brought federal troops to Galveston and announced the Civil War was over and enslaved Black people were free.

In 1980, Texas became the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday.

Celebrating Dads

With Father's Day this weekend, the time is perfect to cuddle up with Dad on the couch (maybe on FaceTime) and watch a film that celebrates dads everywhere. Directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, "Dads" is a new documentary that I can't wait to watch!

“Dads,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, celebrates modern fathers.

For the film, Howard sat down with a handful of famous fathers including Will Smith, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and her own dad.

“What I realized in interviewing all these guys is that we’re treating dads like they’re in the background when they’re not,” Howard explained. “The vast majority of fathers are incredibly involved, present and committed. That needs to be acknowledged. It would be really hard for me to be a good mother when everyone assumed I wasn’t doing anything.”
